You are welcome

Our English-speaking congregation meets at Crkva svetog Blaža (St. Blaise’s Church), Prilaz Gjure Deželića 64, Zagreb, on the second and fourth Sundays of the month at 5:00 pm. We also hold other occasional events, so please check our calendar of events.

Who are we?
Our group consists of people of many nationalities and church backgrounds, and our aim is to provide church services in English for anyone who needs them, whether long-term residents, those here for shorter periods, tourists, or visitors.

We meet twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, from September to June. One service is a celebration of Holy Communion with visiting clergy, and the other a lay-led Service of the Word. Children up to school age are cared for in the creche and those aged up to 12 are welcome to join in organised Sunday School. Refreshments follow the service.

The Zagreb congregation is linked to Christ Church Vienna in the Diocese in Europe, which is part of the Church of England. Our nearest sister congregations are in Ljubljana and Belgrade. For more information on these, please click the icons at the bottom of the page.

We wish you a warm welcome.

  Timely reflection
In the new year 2018, now moving further along the Christian year—on towards Lent, Rev. Patrick Curran, Chaplain of Christ Church Vienna offers this meditation:

Towards the end of last year I became aware of two anniversaries that we will be marking in 2018: the centenary of the end of World War I with the signing of the Armistice at Compiègne on 11 November and the bicentenary of the first performance of Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht in the parish church of St Nicholas in Oberndorf close to Salzburg. The German book publisher Reclam is marking the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth by publishing a biography of the conductor and composer. The Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Glasgow will commemorate the centenary of Claude Debussy’s death with a celebration of his music throughout the year. Beginnings and endings are occasions for us to recall former glories of human creativity and the human tragedies of willed destruction and carnage. There is much to celebrate and much that we should remind ourselves of – “Lest we forget” – so that we may shun making the same mistakes.
The fly in the ointment remains our human nature that does not constantly will the good.

Chairperson’s report for 2016-2017

Before the service on Sunday 26 March, we held our annual church meeting where our chairperson, Janet Tuškan, delivered her annual report of our activities over the past year.

Janet started by saying:

“Since our last AGM in May 2016, we have held regular services, apart from in July and August, on the 2nd and 4th Sundays in the month, with visits from an ordained minister to enable us to celebrate Holy Communion, most frequently Rev. Robin Fox from Belgrade. We are extremely grateful to Janet Berković for her continuing faithful service and inspiring sermons. We continue to meet in the basement of St. Blaise’s Catholic Church in Zagreb. In the autumn the parish priest Mgr. Sekelj retired and was replaced by Mgr. Koren. We are grateful for the continued support and positive relationship we have with the church and the priest.”
